The 3 Secrets to Creating an Engaged Email List

Yay! You’ve finally set up your lead magnet and you’ve got a steady stream of awesome people raising their hands saying, “YES! We want to hear more from you!”. It feels great to be building an audience but you might feel stuck when it comes to what to do next.

If you need some help getting your email list started I’ve got your back.

Your e-mail list will not help your business if your subscribers are not engaged. Your goal is to have a group of fans waiting to hear what you have to say and soak up all you have to offer.


Like you, at first I struggled with what to share with my list. I over thought it and worried that I didn’t have anything to share. In my own mind, I’m pretty ordinary, what could I offer that is unique? Then I realized that all I have to do is be myself and TELL MY STORY.

People WANT to know who you are because people connect with stories. I recently shared my story about my children who have autism on my Instagram account - this post had the most comments and the highest engagement of any image I have ever posted. Why? Because I shared my story and people could connect with me and be encouraged by my experiences.

Share a story about how you started your business or a time when you experienced a “failure” and how you managed disappointment.


Engagement comes when you are able to form a trusting relationship with your audience and help solve their problems. What are they struggling with? What are their pain points? How can you help them?

Not sure what your community needs - ask them! Send an e-mail asking your list to reply to you and tell you exactly how you can help them. This is invaluable feedback that you can use to connect with your community and build relationships.


Having a small following can be a blessing and an excellent opportunity to build relationships. Make the time to reply to e-mails (especially if you asked for feedback), reply to direct messages on Instagram or on Facebook. Those personalized interactions are so valuable!

Another great way to connect with your tribe is to send personal audio messages or videos to your tribe welcoming them or asking for feedback on how you can help. Video has so much more impact than just an e-mail.

One last tip…ensure that you always have a purpose for the email you send. What action do you want the reader to take? Are you providing value to your subscriber? If your reader doesn’t feel like they are getting any value from your e-mails they will be more likely to unsubscribe. So, be you, tell your story and love on your tribe!
